WA ACI Chapter Dinner Meeting

Don Davies, PE, SE, Co-Founder of Davies-Crooks Associates, joins us to discuss Hubbard's Corner Project.

Hubbard’s Corner – Living Laboratory for De-Risking Material Innovation

An adaptive reuse project in Seattle, Hubbard’s Corner, has five industry-first ASTM C1157 zero portland cement concrete pilot pours, four of them being 10cy or more each. The building is now open with the Atlantic Crossing soccer pub on the first floor. This presentation will explore the inspiration behind this lower-carbon concrete initiative and share findings from the placements, testing, and final in-place concrete.

NRMCA 2024 Concrete Innovations Award

Patrick Matsche, Senior Director of Building Innovations at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, will join us to present awards to our local Winners of the NRMCA 2024 Concrete Innovations Award! Congratulations to Hubbard's Corner Project, Gig Harbor Habitat for Humanity, and Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance.

The WA ACI Chapter toured the Torguson skatepark and heard from Matt Fluegge, the concrete contractor, and the Grindline Skateparks team. The January 24 event was so successful that several requested a Summertime encore event—stay tuned!

Presenting Mt. Si Metro Parks with a commemorative plaque recognizing the skatepark's ACI EIC First Place award was a delightful experience - so much pride in the joint accomplishment.

First Place - Decorative Concrete
North Bend Torguson Skatepark, North Bend, WA, USA

Congratulations! Grindline collaborated with the North Bend community in Washington to design a nearly 13,000 ft² (1200 m²) concrete skatepark outfitted with exciting elements for all skill levels and a central gathering area. The park has a one-of-a-kind flow bowl, a pool-style bowl, and a large street skate area. The ready-mixed concrete of the skatepark was applied with the shotcrete method to achieve the smooth-flowing transitions, curves, and blends that were required by the design. The concrete and shotcrete were finished by hand troweling to a buttery smooth finish.

Project Team Members: Owner: Si View Metropolitan Park District; Architectural Firm: Grindline Skateparks, Inc.; Engineering Firm: MacKay Sposito; General and Concrete Contractor: Grindline Skateparks, Inc.; Concrete Supplier: Cadman Inc.

Nominator: ACI Washington Chapter

WACA 2022 Member Community Contribution

At the Summer Meeting this year, our members pledged a combined 25K to the community contribution recipient, Habitat for Humanity. A portion contributed to the September ICF Build in Spokane, joining the efforts of NRMCA, SuperForm, ICFMA, Lafarge, Ash Grove, Interstate Concrete & Asphalt, Central Pre-Mix, CRH, and others. The use of non-combustible concrete forms for this build was especially poignant as the prior homeowner lost his life in a house fire, resulting in the city notifying Habitat for Humanity of the property's availability.

The Spokane Build was the first of many opportunities to partner with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity Washington State has agreed to work with us by earmarking the members' contributions for upcoming concrete-constructed homes. We look forward to future builds that will impact families in a powerful, sustaining manner.

As a contributor, you will soon receive a receipt in the mail for your contribution from either Habitat for Humanity Spokane Chapter or Habitat for Humanity Washington State. I've attached Habitat for Humanity Washington State documents for informational purposes only.

This is Concrete

Produced by the  Global Cement and Concrete Association, without a spoken word,… 2 minutes 30 seconds video presents the story of concrete in our world and everyday lives. Concrete is more than a material. It's about life, building our past and the present, and moving towards a sustainable future. To learn more about the commitment of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) to produce carbon-neutral concrete by 2050, please visit their website: GCCA.org

Access the ACI Certification Schedule and Registration here.

As we recognize everyone must do their part, please be prepared to demonstrate your good health (no colds, fever, and symptom-free) to be part of any exam/performance session. If you are not feeling well, the best advice is to stay home and get better. I will catch you once you are symptom-free. Everyone is required to provide a proper valid ID for each exam.

ACI Certification Process Changes.

Written testing

  • Online Virtual Review session. We are working to complete recorded on-demand review videos.
  • Testing time selection may be required during registration for written exams.
  • ACI has online modules we may consider for Field, AA, and Strength
  • Written exams will be offered separately from review, as necessary.
  • Written exam sessions may be in small groups over multiple sessions.

Performance testing

  • Testing time selection may be required during registration for performance exams.
  • The examinee does all testing at a single station with a single Examiner
  • One Examiner per station
  • Lab for their examinee (s) brings their equipment, including scales. We will have some community equipment available.
  • The goal/need is to reduce interactions & improve to a more consistent process with examinees responsible for their equipment.
  • There is no gathering in the testing area or waiting area. I will schedule small groups in shifts.

We will do our best to accommodate the needs. Still, please recognize that certification on demand is not something we can do—we sincerely appreciate your continued understanding, cooperation, and patience. Please continue to monitor for updates.
