Meeting Topic: Concrete - Its Durability and Sustainability

Concrete is well-known for its durability as a building material, but many ways exist to enhance its sustainability. This meeting will explore various methods to make concrete even more environmentally friendly, including using admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials, and different types of concrete. We will also discuss light reflectivity and protection techniques. These strategies can extend the lifespan of concrete while reducing labor and energy costs (both initial and over the life cycle), minimizing stormwater runoff, mitigating heat island effects, and lowering carbon footprints. Understanding these options is essential as green and sustainable construction becomes increasingly important.

Presented by Dave Flax, Manager Southwest Region, The Euclid Chemical Company. Dave is an accomplished speaker who has conducted numerous national webinars, with attendance ranging from hundreds to over 1,600 participants. He has presented on concrete-related topics at the World of Concrete and various national conventions.  

Earning his Civil Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Dave has over 45 years of experience in construction and concrete. His roles have included field engineer, contractor, specifier, and researcher with the Corps of Engineers. He holds certifications as a Certified Document Technologist (CDT) and a Certified Construction Products Representative (CCPR) from the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and has served on various national committees. Dave has published numerous articles, received the Extra Yard Award from SCCP for over 30 years of service to the concrete industry, and holds a patent for zero-shrinkage concrete with fibers. He enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge gained throughout his career.
