Topic: Battery Street Tunnel Recycling Project

Image result for battery Street Tunnel

Built in the 1950’s and serving as part of Seattle’s Waterfront Corridor,  the Battery Street Tunnel is now part of the largest concrete recycling project in the City of Seattle.  With the demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, The tunnel will be recharged as a City of Seattle utility corridor using almost 130,000 tons of recycled concrete from the viaduct.

Alaskan Way section demo in 60 seconds

The tunnel will be filled in two phases. The lower half of the tunnel will be filled with crushed concrete from the viaduct and the top half of the tunnel will be filled with a type of cellular or other lightweight  concrete pumped in from the surface.

The blue-highlighted zone in the map below shows the extent of the tunnel and fill area:

The SR99 Alaskan Way Viaduct Demolition and decommissioning, Battery Street Tunnel reuse, and surface Street Improvements is an extremely unique project. This design build project combines 3 very different types of projects into one single large project;

  • The viaduct demolition alone is a massive undertaking of specialized machines and high risk deconstruction in an urban environment.
  • The old Battery Street Tunnel although being decommissioned is being packed full of brand new utilities and filled up to the street level.
  • Surface street improvements in the city extend from Harrison to 2 miles south of the project to near T-Mobile field.  This aging infrastructure is being reconnected, restored, and rebuilt, some with lighting, new signals, and new pedestrian access.

All of this done within a unique design build aspect and team build project.
